Improvers Guitar. Mondays 6.45 - 7.45pm.
A 10 week course for anyone between beginner and intermediate level. This is a mixed-ability class focussing on playing songs and developing your skills towards more fluid playing. There will be plenty of scope for participants to develop at their own pace whilst enjoying the opportunity to play together with others. You will learn some basic fingerpicking, various strumming styles, musicianship skills and expand your general chord vocabulary. All of this will be applied to a variety of popular songs, covering a range of different genres.
This class is for you if you are somewhere between a beginner and intermediate player. You should be able to strum basic first position chords and change between them without hesitation.
This course repeats each term with different songs and materials. No class on 25th May Bank Holiday.
Intermediate Guitar. Mondays 8-9pm.
A 10 week course covering intermediate guitar skills. You will learn to: extend your chord vocabulary, understand compound chords, develop your right-hand skills, pick out bass lines with your chords, add riffs, develop your musicianship and learn a range of techniques to draw upon when playing a song. We will apply everything we learn to an exciting range of songs from various genres.
This class is for you if you know all open and bar-chord possibilities, can fingerpick in a consistent style, understand rhythm and pulse and how to maintain momentum.
This course repeats each term with different songs and materials. No class on 25th May Bank Holiday..
Advanced Guitar. Thursdays 7.15 - 8.15pm.
A 10 week course that works towards more advanced skills and music. We will look at 'unlocking' the secrets of the neck for chords, scales and melodies, learn how to create your own chord voicings, develop chord-melody technique, practise performance skills and improve your general musicianship. We will also work on refining your right-hand techniques and developing your feel for inner-rhythm. There will be some music theory content in this course which we will apply to our playing.
This class is for you if you know all open and bar chords, how to form compound chords, a range of right-hand strumming/picking techniques, some major, minor and pentatonic scales, and can maintain good rhythm and a steady pulse in your playing. It is important that you can play without anchoring your right-hand little finger or ring finger to the soundboard.
This course repeats each term with different songs and materials.

What students say...
'I am so glad to have found Poynton Music School as a mature student. It's never too late to learn. I have been enjoying a range of group guitar classes for a year now and I'm now tempted by the ukulele. It's great to have clear guidance from Rik to enable us to have fun playing a range of songs together'.
(Hev Taylor, Guitar)
'I've done a few of Rik's courses and they never disappoint! I'm on the improvers ukulele course at the moment and really enjoying it. The classes give just the right amount of challenge to keep me working hard to better my skills and techniques. Also, it's great fun to play with a group of like-minded people'.
(Brenda Griffin De Tapa, Ukulele)
